AGATE

Surrounded by diamonds and dazzle, you couldn’t help but feel like a bit of a dud.

Even if you actually kind of blended in.

Peeking behind a velvet curtain, you gazed at the glittering ballroom of the Etoirir’s annual Golden Gala. A cacophony of crystal and gold glared back at you, and when your fingers floated to your neck to rub at your fluttering mark, they were met with an array of gemstones to rival the jewels dripping from the ornate banquet tables.

“Fucking lizards,” you muttered to yourself, hand dropping to smooth out the imaginary wrinkles from the gold leaf of your skirts as a cold sweat prickled at your temples.

The gala had come up quicker than you’d thought — not that you’d been privy to much of the planning in the first place as that exasperating dragon still wasn’t including you in all the context yet — and though the mention of it and its masquerade theme had seemed fun at first, you’d quickly realized you were in over your head in more ways than one. Not only was the guest list much more expansive than you had imagined, but Orion had insisted that his eldest son use the gala to formally announce he was mated.

To you, of course.

A human amongst literal dragons.

And your dearly begrudged mate was currently nowhere to be found, off grumbling about caterers and enchanted floral arrangements while barking orders to whatever staff had managed to somehow not faint at the intensity of his commands. Ever the multitasker, he somehow did this as he mingled with the rest of Tenebra City’s masked elite swirling around in the throng of tuxedos and taffeta. Remembering the way he had nearly ripped off the head of the poor faun valet wearing a bright red scarf — which was curious in and of itself, considering how balmy the weather had become — when he had opened the door of the car and extended a hand towards you to help you out of it, you could only imagine what other carnage was ensuing.

You normally would have been ecstatic that he was giving you some distance — there was only so much more you could take when it came to being suffocated by his overpowering scent — if not for the fact that you had no idea what the fuck you were doing. Anatole and Brandr were also off on their own, and not being one to scurry out to hide behind Takara’s skirts, that left you in the awkward position of hiding behind a drape that may have been crafted from some of the finest fabric you’d ever felt, but a drape nonetheless.

The necklaces adorning your neck jingled when you reached up to readjust your mask, decked in the same thick gold brocade as the rest of your heavy gown. The sweetheart neckline of the corset was a far cry from your usual high-necked wardrobe, but it had seemed like the safest option when Anatole had presented your options to you at the command of his oldest brother.
